Courtney was introduced to yoga by watching Lilias Folan on PBS in the 1970's. As a young teenager, she began practicing meditation to cope with debilitating anxiety. At age 18, she established a consistent yoga practice while working with the Aveda Corporation. She has been practicing yoga and meditation for over two thirds of her life and has been formally teaching since 2001. She has been in a yoga classroom, both as a student and as a teacher, for thousands of hours. Courtney's greatest influences and her teaching style was inspired from her own teachers, Robin Johnson and Elana Johnson, both of Turquoise Tree Yoga in Little Rock, Arkansas. Courtney has completed studies through workshops and training with Lilias Folan, Rolf Gates, Suzanne Sterling, Judith Lasiter, Desiree Rumbaugh, Sean Tebor, Seane Corn, Nikki Myers, Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Baxter Bell, Dr. Larry Payne, and many others.
Courtney's passion and her vision is to teach yoga with compassion, integrity, and authenticity. She is known for her "therapeutic yoga classes" and her classes radiate her lighthearted approach to teaching. Based on her years of study, she has developed a systematic approach to yoga that allows every student, even those with limited physical or emotional abilities, to benefit from their practice.
Courtney served on the Yoga Alliance Advisory Committee for Standards for four years and holds every possible certification available through Yoga Alliance. She trained the University of Arkansas staff (and continues to train their staff) with the Extension Division and edited the guide to "Yoga for Children" that is used by the Extension Agency to teach yoga to children in public schools and in 4-H programs throughout Arkansas. She trains medical and mental health professionals throughout the state and works with the Little Rock Veteran's Hospital, training their staff to offer yoga and mind body practices to patients suffering from physical and emotional traumas. She has trained over hundreds of students who now teach all over the world, are studio owners, lead workshops, and own their own yoga schools.
She is the owner of Balance Yoga and Wellness Teacher Training, yoga therapist, a published author, coach and consultant, Stress Management Specialist, workshop leader , conference presenter and is mom to four young adults. She lives in Arkansas with her husband, Cowboy Jim, on their ranch with horses, donkeys, puppies and kitties, mostly all rescues. She tells her husband she is at her limit, for now.

Rena has been practicing yoga for many years and is an E-RYT 200, RYT 500; and a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider ("YACEP"). She received her RYT 200 with Courtney Butler at Balance Yoga & Wellness ("BYW") in the tradition and lineage of Krishnamacharya. She also obtained her advanced 300 hour yoga registration with BYW in Holistic Yoga Practices. Rena also serves as a Lead Teacher for BYW's RYS 200 program and is on staff with BYW's 300 program, an advanced training course in Holistic Yoga Practices. Recently, she also studied with Seane Corn, Amy Ippoliti, Taylor Harkness, and Kino MacGregor; earned her Yin Yoga certification with Bernie Clark and Diana Batts; and obtained her Reiki Level 1 Practitioner Certification as well as Yoga Nidra Certification. She teaches public classes at The Floating Lotus, Zen Studio Chenal, and Arkansas Yoga Collective, as well as private corporate and sponsored classes. In terms of the physical practice of yoga (asana, or poses), Rena's advanced studies in holistic yoga practices and yin yoga have cultivated quite a passion for teaching students how to safely apply postures to their individual bodies, rather than having students try to mold their bodies to fit some preconceived cookie-cutter idea of what a posture "should" look like. That said, yoga is so much vaster than asana practice. Rena's classes always incorporate encouragement, cues and suggestions for how to access and apply the calming, balancing principles of yoga and meditation to everyday life. She has taught many different types of yoga, including yin yoga, beginner yoga, gentle yoga, prenatal, restorative, hatha, vinyasa, power yoga, hot yoga, yoga for trauma, yoga for depression, hot detox, private individual and corporate classes, and individualized holistic yoga. She has led intensives and/or retreats in Chakra-Balancing Yoga, Detox Yoga, Yin Yoga, Yoga for Runners & Athletes, Yin Yoga for Hips & Backs, and Meditation and Stress Relief. Rena is dedicated to teaching and sharing the benefits of a yoga lifestyle and enjoys helping others incorporate yoga and meditation into their daily lives to cultivate peace, calm and balance. Rena is also a professional singer/songwriter and enjoys vegan living and supporting animal rights.
